Eaga was established in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1990 to administer the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme (HEES) which provided government funded grants for low income households to improve the energy efficiency of their homes. From day one Eaga began building a reputation for driving up standards in the industry sector and for delivering excellent customer service to vulnerable people.
Former Chief Executive, John Clough worked hard to develop a culture guided by strong social and environmental values that remain central to Eaga's success today, driven forward under the guidance of current CEO Drew Johnson. Eaga was restructured into an employee owned limited company in 2000 (the Eaga Partnership Ltd, 100 percent owned by an Employee Benefit Trust and modelled on the UKs largest employee owned company, the John Lewis Partnership). The Partnership structure has enabled all employees to benefit from the company’s success and remains a key element in the motivation and commitment of Eaga’s employees today.
Eaga's profitability was transformed in 2005 after the company repositioned itself from programme manager to end-to-end service provider following a rewin of all four areas of the Government's flagship fuel poverty scheme, Warm Front. The company built up its internal delivery capacity through the acquisition of leading insulation installers, Millfold (now Eaga Home Services) in April 2005 and Everwarm in May 2006 and by organically building Iguana, one of the UK's leading domestic boiler installation businesses. As well as building Eaga's full national blue-collar delivery capability, the acquisitions brought a significant increase in the work done for utility companies under the rapidly expanding EEC programme.
Eaga has continued to diversify into new markets, in particular the social housing sector where it has a strong reputation. The strategic acquisition of HEAT (ranked number 10 in the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies to Work for 2007 ) in December 2006 significantly increased Eaga's presence in the social housing market, where it is rapidly becoming a leading player.
Acquisitions
Eaga's acquisition strategy is an integral element of the company's overall business strategy. Key acquisitions over the last four years have broadened Eaga's coverage of the UK energy efficiency market, both regionally and in the range of products and services offered. These acquisitions strengthened the delivery platform from which Eaga can deliver further growth into existing and new markets.
Millfold Group
Eaga acquired Millfold Group, one of the leading insulation businesses, in 2005. The company - now part of Eaga Home Services - employs over 500 people at 15 operational bases across England and Wales and installs cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and external wall insulation for utility companies, local authorities, social housing providers, house builders and private domestic customers.
Everwarm Group
Eaga acquired Everwarm Group, Scotland's largest provider of domestic insulation services in May 2006. The company - now part of Eaga Home Services - also installs central heating systems. The acquisition of Everwarm complemented the Milfold Group acquisition by providing coverage in Scotland and giving Eaga complete coverage of the mainland UK residential insulation market.
Home Energy and Associated Technology (HEAT)
Eaga acquired White Horse Facilities Management Group (the principal trading subsidiary is HEAT) in December 2006. HEAT is a Northern Ireland based group which installs and maintains domestic central heating systems under 15 long term contracts with social housing providers (primarily with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Leeds North West Homes housing association and Birmingham City Council).
JD Heating
Eaga acquired Birmingham based JD Heating in 2006, a large installer of domestic central heating systems, predominantly in the social housing market. JD Heating - now part of Eaga Social Housing Services - has a five year contract with Birmingham City Council to deliver 26,500 central heating service contracts per annum. The acquisition brings with it the opportunity to work more closely with Birmingham City Council, one of Europe's largest social housing providers and an in house electrical division, providing the opportunity to diversify Eaga's current social housing offering.
RG Francis
Eaga completed the acquisition of heating installation and repair company RG Francis Limited in June 2007. The acquisition was the first since Eaga plc’s flotation earlier and reflects the company’s continued strategy of growth in the highly fragmented social housing sector.
Essex-based RGF specialises in providing services to the social housing market. The company has joined Eaga’s Installation Services operations, bringing a geographic footprint for delivery into social housing in the South East which complements Eaga’s existing UK coverage in the Midlands, the North East and Northern Ireland.
